I’m an Executive Platinum member with around 550K Loyalty Points in the trailing 12 months on American Airlines. I currently have 10 Systemwide Upgrades (SWUs) and am traveling to Madrid tonight with my family.
Our tickets were purchased in October 2025, and our family of four is on the same PNR with SWU requests submitted at that time. We later added my niece (who has no status and only recently received an AAdvantage number), and I requested a SWU for her last week.
Yesterday, with about 12 business class seats still available, my niece’s SWU cleared. However, my own family’s upgrades have not cleared, despite having higher status and earlier requests. Based on my understanding, upgrades should prioritize status, then Loyalty Points, then request date.
It’s frustrating to see that upgrades appear to have cleared out of sequence, potentially favoring lower-status passengers or smaller parties, while my family’s requests remain pending even though seats are still available.
