Had a really frustrating experience with Qatar Airways at DOH and wanted to see if others have dealt with something similar or know the right way to escalate this.
I was flying Almaty → Doha → Toronto. The first leg was delayed due to an airline issue, which caused me to miss my Toronto connection. Qatar Airways rebooked me on the same flight the following day and told me hotel and meals would be provided.
That’s where everything fell apart.
I spent nearly 6 hours (8:30 am–2:30 pm) going back and forth between the QA transfer desk with almost no clear information. Eventually, a desk manager told me they did have accommodation outside the airport, but I supposedly could not leave because my passport had less than 6 months validity (I had 5 months).
This immediately raised red flags. Based on official sources (Discover Qatar, Visit Qatar, Hamad Airport, and Qatar Airways itself), 3 months validity is sufficient, and I’m eligible for Visa on Arrival (Indian passport) as well as A3 ETA (Canadian PR). I showed them multiple official references all dismissed without review.
They also claimed there was no accommodation available inside the airport, so the implied solution was that I should remain airside for nearly 24 hours, despite the missed connection being entirely airline-caused.
While waiting, I applied for the A3 ETA myself and received approval within an hour. After this, QA staff said they could only provide a hotel if the visa was arranged through their own channels, and since I obtained it independently, they would not provide a hotel nor reimburse me if I booked one myself. They also tried to discourage me by saying I would “likely still be denied entry.”
They refused to give anything in writing and told me to “wait and see” if something became available later, while also saying chances were low.
At that point, I escalated to an airport supervisor and then went directly to immigration assistance. Immigration reviewed my ETA and passport and confirmed I was fully eligible to enter Qatar.
Only after multiple reversals did Qatar Airways finally issue a hotel voucher. I cleared immigration immediately with zero issues, which made the earlier refusal even more baffling.
