We moved from the Midwest to Destin, FL five years ago, thinking it’d be palm trees and beach days. While the beach is definitely a perk, we didn’t expect the chilly winters, sky-high insurance rates, and $4 tolls just to visit our favorite spots. Summers? Brutal. It’s not endless summer it’s like swapping snow shovels for sweating through T-shirts indoors.
Also, the cultural shift caught us off guard. The Panhandle has more Southern charm than tropical vibes, which isn’t a bad thing just different. Florida feels like multiple states rolled into one.
Anyone else move down here thinking it’d be all sunshine and ended up surprised by the realities?
