Flying with a pet feels broken right now

We flew with our small dog recently and did everything by the book. Booked him early, paid the fee, bought a carrier that fits the rules. Tried to be responsible.

Delta somehow overbooked pets on the flight, so we had to show up super early just to make sure he’d even be allowed on. In the agent line, a huge chunk of people had dogs with service animal vests that were very obviously not trained service animals. Still, they skip the fee and the limits.

We pay the $150, get on board, and our dog is completely silent the whole flight. Meanwhile the so called support animals are whining nonstop. Someone near us even said after landing they didn’t realize there was a dog nearby. That’s how it should be.

It’s frustrating that people who follow the rules deal with overbooking, first come first serve stress, and big fees, while others just slap a vest on a dog and bypass everything. Makes you wonder why anyone bothers doing it the right way.
