Flying tomorrow with a 2 year old stuck in a middle seat, what’s the least awful way to handle this?

That’s a rough situation, and honestly not what people mean when they complain about “that parent.”

If you can, get to the airport early and talk to the gate agent as soon as they’re set up. Be calm, explain it’s a family emergency, and that your two year old is currently seated alone in a middle seat. Agents are way more likely to help when it’s framed clearly and early, not at boarding.

If nothing opens up, your next best bet is onboard, but approach it carefully. Ask the FA first if they’re willing to help ask around. If you do ask passengers directly, be polite, specific, and low pressure. Something like “would anyone be willing to switch so my toddler can sit next to me?” goes over much better than just asking for a better seat.

Also worth checking seat maps obsessively between now and boarding. Last minute changes, missed connections, or upgrades sometimes free things up.

You’re dealing with an actual emergency and a literal toddler, not trying to game the system. Most people can tell the difference.
