Florida Brings Back Controversial Black Bear Hunt After 10-Year Pause

I’ve always been fascinated by Florida’s wildlife, but hearing that black bear hunting is coming back this December makes me uneasy. It’s wild to think we went from barely a few hundred bears in the 1970s to over 4,000 today. The state says it’s about population control, but after what happened during the 2015 hunt with unlicensed hunters and even cubs being killed I wonder if this one will go any smoother.

Part of me gets the conservation logic, but it’s hard to reconcile with how fast things went wrong last time. If you’ve lived or hiked in any of the 31 affected counties, how do you feel about this? Is it necessary, or should we find other ways to manage the population?
