FLL vs MIA for a Miami cruise… what’s the least stressful option?

Trying to plan flights for a Miami cruise and could really use some advice. Goal is cheapest possible, but I also don’t want to mess this up.

I need to be at my hotel by 5pm the day I arrive (there’s an event that evening). On the return, we get off the ship around 8am and I’m flexible on flight time as long as I’m not rushing. Hotel has a free shuttle to and from Miami airport.

I’m traveling solo, no checked bags, and I’ve never used public transportation before. I’m also a bit nervous since I’ll be on my own.

Option 1 is flying into FLL since it’s cheaper. That would mean Tri-Rail to Miami Airport on arrival, then using the hotel shuttle. On the way back, Uber from the cruise port to MIA, then possibly Tri-Rail again if needed. I’m not sure how long any of this actually takes, how easy Tri-Rail is to figure out, or how much buffer I should plan for TSA.

Option 2 is just flying straight into MIA, which costs more but seems way simpler.

For someone who’s new to public transit and trying not to stress, is FLL worth the savings or should I just pay more and fly into MIA? Any rough time estimates or “gotchas” I should know about?
