First time flying, when do they actually scan the ticket?

This is my first time at an airport and I am traveling alone, so I am a bit nervous.

I already went through TSA and now I am sitting at my gate, but nobody has scanned my ticket yet.

Do I need to go to a desk before boarding time to get it scanned? Or does that happen later? My flight leaves in about an hour and I just want to make sure I am not missing a step.
