I recently traveled with my bike on an Amtrak Northeast Regional train from Philadelphia to Washington, DC, and wanted to share my experience. I arrived at the station about 45 minutes before departure with my bike prepared (front wheel removed and battery disconnected).
At the station, staff required me to take the bike down the stairs rather than using the escalator. Once on the platform, a conductor initially informed me that the designated bike storage area was full, so I had to move quickly along the platform to find available space. Eventually, I was directed to place the bike in an overflow luggage area, where it needed to be secured using a wall-mounted hook.
Storing the bike required some effort and maneuvering, especially since the frame and tire size made fitting it into place more difficult. In retrospect, deflating the rear tire may have made the process easier. The bike was securely stored during the journey and appeared safe from theft.
Boarding also required lifting the bike up steps onto the train, as there was no level boarding. While manageable, it added some physical strain.
Overall, while the experience was workable, it involved more effort than expected for a solo traveler, and I may reconsider bringing a bike on future Amtrak trips. I’m sharing this in case others are planning to travel with a bike and want to understand the process and potential challenges.
