Just got back from a 15 day trip through Germany and nearby cities and wanted to share this for anyone else overthinking train luggage like I did. We flew into Munich and took trains to Zurich, Strasbourg, Stuttgart, then back to Munich.
We each brought a large suitcase right under the 62 inch limit, close to 50 lbs, plus backpacks. We packed for cold weather and ended up not needing nearly as much, but better safe than sorry.
My biggest anxiety was luggage space on trains. I could never find clear photos of racks online and couldn’t picture how our bags would fit. We booked early and went first class for comfort. On ICE and EC trains, the luggage racks were sturdy and handled our big suitcases just fine. On one train the bag even stuck out a bit, but it was secure and didn’t move at all.
Trains were moderately full during Christmas market season and staff had zero issues with how bags were placed. Looking back, I definitely stressed more than necessary. Hopefully this helps someone else who’s visual and worrying about the same thing.
