I recently went through security at Los Angeles International Airport where my carry-on needed additional screening by Transportation Security Administration staff.
The officer who handled my bag appeared very elderly, possibly close to 90. She was extremely kind and friendly, and we had a short conversation while she was processing my luggage.
But I couldn’t help feeling concerned watching her struggle a bit with lifting and handling a fully packed carry-on, especially given how physically demanding the job seems. It also made me think about other factors like long commutes, airport stress, and dealing with difficult passengers.
It also crossed my mind that she might still be working out of financial necessity, especially given past government shutdown situations where federal workers temporarily went without pay.
I’m just wondering if this kind of situation is common in TSA staffing, and whether older employees in these roles are generally supported appropriately.
