One of my favorite public transport experiences while traveling has been using the traditional Dghajsa boats in Malta.
We used these small water taxis, which typically seat around six people, to travel between Senglea in the Three Cities and Valletta across the Grand Harbour. The journey was very scenic and became part of our daily routine during our stay.
The ride is inexpensive, only a few euros per person, and boats can be hailed directly from the harbor. Although motorized, the boats still use oars for maneuvering when docking, which adds to their traditional character. The trip takes under 10 minutes, and at times we were the only passengers on board.
During the rides, we also spoke with several boat operators, many of whom come from families with generations of experience in this trade. They expressed pride in continuing the tradition passed down from their fathers and grandfathers.
Overall, it was a simple but memorable transport experience with great views and a strong sense of local heritage.
