FA brushed off bulging battery after turbulence, what’s standard procedure?

Last week on ORD to DEN, turbulence knocked my portable battery off the tray table and cracked the casing. After that, the battery started bulging.

I hit the call button and was told over the intercom to turn it off unless it was an emergency. When the FA finally came, I showed her the battery and explained it was bulging. She told me to just hold onto it since we were landing in under an hour and walked away. Same response when it got worse and I called again.

After landing, the gate agent was surprised I wasn’t helped onboard and said they’d need to file a report because that’s not standard procedure.

So now I’m curious. What is the actual procedure for a damaged or bulging battery onboard? Do planes have fireproof storage for this kind of thing?
