Extra TSA checks at AUS gate tonight

Flying AUS to EWR tonight and got hit with something I’ve never seen on a domestic flight. TSA was set up at the gate, checking IDs again and pulling some folks aside on the jet bridge for bag and laptop checks. Felt more like an international departure. Anyone know what triggers that?
