TLDR: booked a fully refundable hotel on Expedia, canceled within the stated deadline, got confirmation saying I’d receive a full refund… and weeks later I’m still missing half my money. Expedia keeps pushing it back on the hotel.
Details:
I booked a hotel on 12/3/25 that was listed as fully refundable if canceled by 1/13/26. The hotel charged me half the reservation upfront and was supposed to charge the rest at check-in.
I canceled on 1/6/26, well before the deadline. Expedia sent me a cancellation confirmation clearly stating I’d receive a full refund from the hotel.
I waited about two weeks, nothing. Contacted the hotel directly, no response. Went back to Expedia and they said the hotel is responsible and I have to deal with them. Expedia support tried calling the hotel while I was on hold, but each time they were told the manager “isn’t available.” Expedia said they’d escalate and follow up. Each escalation ended with an email saying they couldn’t resolve it and were sorry.
It’s now been over three weeks. I keep getting the runaround. Expedia’s final answer is basically “we know this sucks, but there’s nothing else we can do.”
This really bothers me because:
The room was priced higher because it was refundable
Expedia explicitly confirmed the refund in writing
I booked through Expedia assuming they’d back the policy they advertise
At this point I’m questioning whether Expedia has any legal responsibility here, or if “free cancellation” is basically meaningless if the hotel refuses to cooperate.
