I recently realized something that confused me. I have a normal German driver’s license (Class B), which includes the AM category, and I also carry an International Driver’s Permit. Like many tourists, I’ve rented scooters in Asia and other countries while traveling.
But I noticed that the AM category only allows scooters up to 50cc and around 45 km/h, while most rental scooters abroad are usually between 110cc and 160cc.
From what I understand, that technically means I’m not properly licensed to ride those scooters. I’ve also read that if you’re riding without the correct license, travel health insurance or liability insurance might refuse to cover you in case of an accident, which could end up costing a lot of money.
If that’s true, it seems surprising because so many European tourists rent scooters in places like Thailand.
Does this really mean a lot of people are riding without valid insurance coverage? Has anyone here had experience with how insurance companies handle this after an accident?
