Ethiopian is building a monster new airport outside Addis

Just saw this and honestly didn’t realize how massive this project is. Ethiopian officially broke ground on Bishoftu International Airport and the numbers are kind of wild.

Phase 1 alone is supposed to handle 60 million passengers a year, which is already about three times Bole. Final buildout goes to 110 million passengers plus huge cargo capacity. Four parallel runways, A380 capable, and way more aircraft stands than they have now.

The elevation part is what really caught my attention. It’s a few hundred meters lower than Bole, which apparently makes a big difference for long haul performance. Makes a lot of sense given how aggressively Ethiopian is expanding ultra long haul routes.

If they actually pull this off on schedule, Addis is going to be an absolutely dominant hub for Africa and beyond. Curious how they’ll manage the transition from Bole when this comes online.
