Enterprise accused me of rental damage months later. What should I do?

Posting here after being told /scams wasn’t the right place. Mostly looking for advice and to warn others.

We got a letter in December 2025 saying we damaged a car we rented from Enterprise. I’m absolutely certain we did not. The rental ended in September 2025, and the final invoice shows the car was returned with no damage noted. The kicker is that the body shop inspection that supposedly found the damage happened about 1.5 months later and roughly 3,000 miles after we returned the car.

That means multiple other customers must have rented the car after us before anyone noticed or documented this damage.

I disputed the claim with Enterprise by phone and in writing. Today I received a response saying that after their “investigation,” they’re still holding me responsible under the rental agreement. No explanation for the gap in time or mileage.

This feels absurd. How can they pin damage on me when the car was driven thousands of miles after I returned it and no damage was noted at check-in?

I’m debating next steps. Do I involve my insurance and let them fight it, even though I don’t want a claim tied to me for damage I didn’t cause? Or do I push back harder myself? I’m considering formally requesting a list of renters between my return date and the body shop inspection.

I’ve rented cars for years and never dealt with anything like this. Curious if others have seen similar behavior lately or have advice on how to handle it without getting steamrolled.
