Just wanted to share an FYI after flying EgyptAir from Toronto to Delhi via Cairo last month.
I had a long layover both ways. About 24 hours on the outbound and around 18 hours on the return. Aside from a 5 hour delay on the way out, the flights themselves were fine.
EgyptAir offers a free hotel with meals for long layovers. Once you land in Cairo, you line up, register with your passport, and they group passengers by onward flight and bus you to a hotel.
Here’s the part that surprised me. On the outbound, there were four of us continuing to Delhi. Two men, two women. Another woman and I started chatting and stuck together since she was traveling solo and a bit nervous.
When we got to the hotel, they told us EgyptAir had only booked two rooms total and expected us to share. If we wanted our own rooms, we’d have to pay extra. We were okay with it, but it definitely caught me off guard.
I assumed it was a one time mistake, but on the return trip the exact same thing happened again. Same process, same outcome. Shared rooms unless you paid. I only got my own room that time because there happened to be one left and I was the only female in the group.
Not complaining, since the hotel and meals are a perk and better than nothing. Just wanted to give people a heads up so no one is surprised or uncomfortable if this happens to them.
