This catches a lot of people out.
Even though it’s a domestic UK flight, Ryanair’s own policy is what matters here, not UK border rules. And Ryanair is pretty strict. Their standard rule is passport or national ID card only. They generally do not accept driving licences as valid travel ID, even on domestic routes.
Other airlines like easyJet are more flexible within the UK, which is probably why you’re seeing mixed info.
But with Ryanair, if the website says passport or national ID only, I would take that at face value. They’re known for sticking closely to their rules at the gate.
If your passport won’t be back in time, you might want to:
Contact Ryanair directly and ask specifically about EDI to STN
Consider changing the flight if possible
Look at alternative ID options if you have any qualifying national ID
I wouldn’t risk just turning up with a driving licence and hoping for flexibility.
