EC261 claim denied, technical issue or bird strike?

Had my AMS–HKG flight canceled back in October. At the airport they said it was a technical issue, so I filed for the 600€ EC261 compensation. Cathay just replied saying it was actually a bird strike, which would make it exempt.


Kinda frustrating that the story changed. Do they have to show proof if you push back? Anyone dealt with Cathay doing this before? Wondering what the next step is escalate, ask for documentation, or go through one of the EU claim agencies?
