Planning a first trip to NYC in September and trying to figure out the best way to handle the rental car.
We’ll be driving from the Rochester area and staying at Hyatt House Chelsea. We’ll probably arrive around rush hour, which is why I’m second-guessing driving into Manhattan.
Here are the options I’m considering:
Option 1 – Drive into Manhattan
Enter via the Lincoln Tunnel
Return the rental to Avis on 11th Ave
Then Uber or take transit to the hotel
Costs would be roughly $17 tunnel toll + ~$9 congestion fee
Option 2 – Avoid city driving
Return the rental at Newark Airport
Take the train to Penn Station and then walk or take transit to the hotel
Probably around $40 total for train tickets
We’ll each have a suitcase, so minimizing transfers would be nice, but cost and simplicity also matter.
Is driving into Manhattan actually manageable in this case, or is returning the car at Newark and taking the train the better move?
Or is there a third option I should be considering?
