I’ve heard this rumor forever about sliding a $20 to the front desk at check in and magically getting an upgrade. I’ve never tried it because it feels kind of gross to me. Tipping before anything happens feels more like a bribe than a tip.
If people do this, what’s the actual etiquette? Is it a straight up “any chance of an upgrade?” while holding the cash, or do you just tip normally and hope for the best?
Also curious if this actually works depending on the hotel. Chain vs boutique, mid range vs luxury, US vs international. I always hear Vegas mentioned, but not sure how real that is.
Would love to hear from hotel staff or people who’ve actually tried it.
