Does the AA free checked bag benefit apply if the first leg is operated by Hawaiian Airlines?

I’m considering booking an OGG–PHL itinerary through American Airlines and using my AAdvantage credit card to get the free checked bag benefit. However, the first segment is operated by Hawaiian Airlines (via Alaska), with a connection in LAX.

Since the ticket is booked through AA but the initial flight is not operated by American Airlines, I’m unsure whether the credit card baggage benefit would still apply or if I would end up paying because of the operating carrier.
