Does checking in early on the hotel app hurt your chances of a better room?

Have a hotel stay tonight and got the email to check in early through the IHG app. I can already complete check in, but now I’m second guessing it.

Is checking in early a mistake if you’re hoping for a nicer room or a better location? Or are rooms basically preassigned anyway and it doesn’t really matter when you check in?

I’m always polite to staff and usually chat at the desk, so I don’t want to accidentally lock myself into a worse room by tapping a button too early.
