Do you really need a credit card to travel? Or can you get by with debit and cash?

I’m 29F in Ontario and planning to start traveling this year. Thinking some US road trips and maybe one or two international trips.

I don’t use credit cards because I’ve gotten into trouble with them in the past. But I’m wondering if I’ll basically be forced to get one just for travel.

Even here in Ontario, a lot of basic motels require a credit card for booking or incidentals. Is that pretty much the standard everywhere? Or have people managed fine using debit only?

Not looking for fancy hotels or anything. Just safe, affordable places.

Would also love any solo female travel recs while we’re at it.
