I recently came across an interesting analysis of same-day pricing trends for Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor routes (Boston–NYC, NYC–DC, and DC–NYC), based on several days of systematic tracking.
The data suggests that:
A significant portion of trains (around 30–60%) saw price drops on the day of departure
When prices dropped, the reductions were often substantial (around $50–$120 on average, with some much larger drops)
Some prices fluctuated quickly, dropping and then rising again within a short time window
This seems to suggest that if you’re booking last-minute and have flexibility, waiting and monitoring prices could lead to savings—but with the risk that cheaper fares disappear quickly.
I’m curious:
Have others observed similar same-day price drops on Amtrak routes?
Is this a consistent pricing pattern or more of an occasional occurrence?
How risky is it to wait for a drop versus booking early at a higher price?
Would appreciate insights from frequent Amtrak travelers or anyone familiar with their pricing behavior.
