Denied check in due to “special handling”… has anyone seen this before?

Wondering if anyone has run into this kind of issue with United.


I tried to check in right at the 24 hour mark using both my phone and laptop. Every time it failed and said something like “you have not been checked in, please see a desk agent.”


Day of flight, I get to the airport about 1.5 hours early. Tried the self service kiosk and it said my reservation required “special handling” and told me to see an agent. I went to the counter and the first agent told me I was “too late,” which wasn’t true. Boarding hadn’t even started yet.


She tried to look it up, then said her computer wasn’t working and sent me to another agent. Same thing. “Computer not working.” Then they told me I’d have to rebook a new flight myself because they “don’t do rebooking.”


No explanation of what the special handling was, no attempt to resolve it, nothing. Just stranded.


Has anyone else had this happen where check in is blocked and you’re told to see an agent, only to get nowhere at the airport? What actually causes this and how are you supposed to deal with it if the agents won’t help?
