I was involuntarily denied boarding on a flight from the US to the UK. I was rebooked onto another flight 16 hours later and had to spend a night in a hotel, which I paid for myself.
The ticket was sold by British Airways but operated by American Airlines.
From what I can see, both UK and US rules seem relevant:
UK Civil Aviation Authority rules on denied boarding suggest compensation of up to £520 plus hotel, transport, and meals
US Department of Transportation rules on involuntary bumping suggest compensation up to 400% of the fare (capped at $2150)
Since the flight appears to fall under both jurisdictions depending on interpretation, I’m trying to understand which regulation actually applies in this case.
Does the airline choose one framework based on operating carrier, departure location, or ticketing airline? Or is there a clear rule for cases like this?
