Denied boarding in Doha with Qatar… feels like overbooking

This happened yesterday and I’m still trying to make sense of it.

Had a round trip booking with Qatar from the US to Hyderabad via Doha. On the return, the first leg was operated by IndiGo but booked under a Qatar PNR. That flight was delayed, but my wife and I still made it through security and got to the gate on time. Boarding was still happening and they were even making last call announcements.

We were literally in line to board when the gate agents stopped us, looked at our seat numbers, and denied boarding. One agent said it was due to a “miscount.” Another said we were removed because our first leg was delayed. Neither explanation made sense, especially since other passengers were still boarding right in front of us.

We ended up stuck at the airport for almost 8 hours before they finally gave us a hotel. Communication was terrible and the explanations kept changing, which made the whole thing even more frustrating.

Really disappointing experience and poorly handled overall.
