Dengue in Hawaii? Here’s What I Learned After 12th Case Confirmed

I just got back from Oahu and saw news of the 12th confirmed dengue fever case in Hawaii 11 on Oahu and 1 on Maui. Health officials say all infections were travel-related, but there’s real concern about local transmission since the mosquitos that carry dengue do live in the state. The Hawaii Department of Health is urging residents and travelers to remove standing water and avoid mosquito bites for three weeks after returning from endemic areas.

I didn’t realize how quickly dengue can turn serious 1 in 20 cases can become life-threatening. This definitely has me rethinking how I prep for tropical travel. Do any locals have advice for staying bite-free in the islands? And fellow travelers do you pack your own repellents or buy them there?
