Delta partners with Shell and the Port of Portland for first commercial-scale SAF uplift

Delta Air Lines, in collaboration with Shell and the Port of Portland, has achieved its first commercial-scale sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) uplift at Portland International Airport (PDX). Over 400,000 gallons of U.S.-made, waste-derived SAF were delivered to the Zenith Terminal and blended with conventional jet fuel before entering PDX’s private fuel supply system via barge, truck, and pipeline. Industry leaders praised the move as a demonstrable example of how existing fuel infrastructure and strategic partnerships can scale SAF access across U.S. airports. Delta emphasized that SAF can slash lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80% and is actively advocating for policy support—such as the 40B SAF Blenders Tax Credit and 45Z Production Credit—to make such initiatives sustainable and replicable nationwide.
