Delta offered a “free upgrade” then double booked the seat and blamed me

This happened yesterday and I’m still annoyed. Delta pushed a complimentary upgrade to me before boarding. I didn’t ask for it, it just showed up, so I accepted. The upgrade didn’t clearly show on my boarding pass, only if I tapped into the upgrade list, but I assumed it was legit.

I board, go to the upgraded seat, and someone else is already sitting there with the same seat assignment. I tell a FA and she tells me to wait at my original seat and it’ll get sorted out. Fine.

After boarding finishes, nothing changes. I ask again and get told “once the gate door closes, it’ll be fixed.” Door closes. Still nothing. I ask a third time and now the FA has an attitude and says there’s nothing she can do and that upgrades are the gate agent’s problem. That’s the opposite of what she told me earlier.

I asked for her name and she refused and walked away.

What makes it worse is that at different points the system showed me as upgraded to Comfort+ and later even First, but in the end I sat in my original seat while the other passenger kept the upgrade.

I get that upgrades aren’t guaranteed. That’s not even the issue. The issue is Delta’s system clearly messed up, I was given conflicting info, and then got treated like I was the problem for politely asking questions.

Has anyone else had a Delta “complimentary upgrade” completely fall apart like this?
