Delta Air Lines has reached a $78.75 million preliminary settlement to resolve lawsuits arising from a 2020 incident in Los Angeles when a Boeing 777 was forced to dump nearly 15,000 gallons of jet fuel at low altitude during an emergency return to LAX. The release affected several neighborhoods, coating schools and homes and exposing children and residents to kerosene mist. While the FAA cleared the pilots and Delta denied wrongdoing, thousands of residents alleged health impacts and property damage. The settlement will provide roughly $50 million in compensation after legal fees to over 38,000 claimants, avoiding what could have been years of prolonged litigation. Delta has said it remains committed to maintaining strong safety and environmental practices.
