I can kind of see why some cruise lines experimented with staff-served buffets after COVID, because some of the behavior you see at cruise buffets is honestly pretty questionable.
I have seen things like people touching food and then changing their mind, kids grabbing items with their hands, and even someone coughing directly over the salad bar. There are also people who spend a long time sorting through food trays looking for the “best” pieces, especially with items like shrimp.
That said, I also did not really enjoy the staff-served buffet setup either. It often felt slower and more awkward, with constant back-and-forth like:
“a little more”
“actually less”
“can I switch sides”
Part of the appeal of cruising for me is being able to casually walk through the buffet and pick what I want without having to interact every time.
I can honestly see arguments for both systems, but neither feels perfect. I am curious what others prefer and why.
