I came across a map showing which U.S. states are the most and least generous with counter-service tipping, and it’s eye-opening. On average, only about half of customers paying by card leave a tip at coffee shops or fast food counters, and the average is around 15.8% after taxes and fees. Since 2018, tip percentages for counter service have been dropping nationwide.
Personally, I’ve noticed more and more digital prompts popping up, even for quick takeout orders, and sometimes it feels awkward deciding whether to tip. I always try to leave something at my local coffee spot, but I get why some folks are feeling tip fatigue, especially with rising costs. How about you, do you always tip at counter service, or does it depend on the situation?
