Back in 2000, I traveled as a paying passenger on a large German container ship from Newark to Valencia, Spain. At the time, I found contact details for shipping lines through “Travel Tips.”
Now I’m trying to find similar opportunities for 2026—specifically container ship travel from the USA to destinations in Asia, South America, Europe, or Africa. So far, my online searches (especially outside of UK-based Baltic routes) haven’t been successful.
Does anyone know which shipping lines still allow passengers and where I can find reliable contact information to arrange a trip in the near future?
Also, for anyone interested in this kind of travel, Laurence Nixon’s Vagabond Voyaging: The Story of Freighter Travel is a great read about a 1926-era journey.
