Connecting in SFO to Christchurch, does he need to recheck bags?

My brother changed his plans last minute and is now flying MAN → ZRH → SFO → CHC. The first two legs are with Swiss and the SFO to Christchurch leg is with United.

Since he’s arriving into the US at SFO, I assume he’ll need to clear immigration, collect his checked bags, and then recheck them before the United flight. But I’ve seen mixed answers online and even staff at MAN weren’t totally sure.

It was all booked pretty quickly and he’s already on the way, so just hoping to confirm what the process will be at SFO.
