I’m planning to book a hotel using points through the Amex travel portal, even though I know it may not be the most efficient way to use points.
I understood that the typical redemption rate is around 100 points per 1 cent in value. Based on that, a hotel stay priced at about $2,493 should require roughly 249,300 points.
However, the system is instead showing that I would need around 324,006 points or an equivalent cash payment, which does not match the expected conversion rate.
I’m trying to understand why there is a discrepancy between the expected redemption value and what the portal is actually charging in points.
