After arriving from an international flight at Dulles Airport, I ended up in the “future gate site” area and followed the signs toward baggage claim, which led me to an underground train system. At the station, I was shown a map, but there was no clear indication of where baggage claim was located, which left me confused.
I went back upstairs to reassess, and while I was there I noticed a train arriving labeled “to baggage claim,” so I realized that must be the correct route. However, the situation remained unclear because different trains displayed different destinations such as Gate A or Gate C, and there was no obvious way to know when the baggage claim train would arrive.
I eventually boarded a train heading toward Gate A, assuming I could still reach baggage claim from there. Inside the train, the map finally clarified that baggage claim is located at the main terminal, which added to the confusion since “terminal” is usually associated with departures rather than arrivals.
At Gate A, I followed the flow expecting a walkway to the main terminal, but there was none unless you were heading toward specific gates. Eventually, I took another train that indicated it was going to baggage claim and finally reached my destination.
Overall, the signage and train destination labeling felt inconsistent and made it difficult to understand how to reliably get to baggage claim, since train destinations were only shown right before departure.
