While booking a same-day change for a SAN–BNA trip, I was offered what appeared to be a direct flight. The listing showed it as a single segment, and even the seat map only displayed one aircraft, so it seemed straightforward.
After selecting it, I refreshed the itinerary and noticed it actually included a 40-minute stop in Houston (IAH). This came as a surprise because nothing initially indicated there would be a connection.
I tried to switch back to my original routing via Denver, but by then my original seats were gone, leaving me stuck with either a connecting itinerary through Houston or less desirable seating options.
I later found that others had experienced similar confusion with these “direct” listings. From my perspective, the booking flow does not clearly indicate that a plane change is involved.
When I contacted support, I was told that it is technically a “change of aircraft” rather than a standard layover, even though there is still a stop in Houston. The agent explained that it appears as non-stop because the stop is brief and part of a plane swap process.
Regardless of terminology, it still feels misleading, and I think it would be much clearer if the itinerary explicitly showed the connection.
