The Park Hyatt Sydney has now been categorized as a “resort,” and I think this raises a broader issue regarding how Hyatt elite benefits are being applied, particularly for Guest of Honor (GoH) bookings.
Since resort properties are exempt from guaranteed late checkout, this change effectively removes one of the key benefits associated with elite status at a property like this.
It feels similar to what has happened with other properties such as Park Hyatt Tokyo, where reclassification appears to reduce the value of status perks.
I also think the increasing use of Guest of Honor awards may be contributing to this trend. With Globalists receiving multiple GoH awards annually and additional earnings through qualifying nights, there seems to be a high volume of status-linked stays across the system.
In my view, the widespread and relatively easy use of GoH has led to more casual travelers accessing high-end properties, which may be influencing how hotels manage and protect elite benefits. This could eventually dilute the value of earned status at premium properties.
