Concern about whether a Southwest carry-on may need to be checked due to limited overhead space and boarding group

I received a notification from Southwest saying that overhead bin space may be limited on my upcoming flight and suggesting that passengers pre-check bags.

I’m currently in boarding group 8, and I’ve placed my valuables in my carry-on because I prefer not to check it, especially since I have a connecting flight.

If I’m required to gate-check my carry-on due to lack of space, I’m wondering whether I would also have to pay any additional fee for that, or if it would be handled free of charge.

I understand it may be unavoidable, but I’m trying to understand what to expect at the gate.
