Christmas Road Trip on I-95 – should we flip the route to avoid traffic?

We’re landing at EWR on Christmas Day and planning a road trip down I-95 to SW Florida, stopping in D.C. and Savannah. But I didn’t realize how brutal post-Christmas traffic is, especially on the 26th and 27th. Add four jetlagged kids to the mix and sitting on a clogged interstate doesn’t sound festive.

Thinking we might flip the route power down to Florida on Christmas Day (since roads are empty), then hit Savannah and D.C. on the way back when traffic’s lighter post-holidays. The only hiccup: convincing my wife to do an 8–9 hour drive after a long-haul flight. Anyone done a similar trip or have tips to make it smoother? Appreciate any advice from fellow road trippers.
