Just got burned trying to use my CSR $300 hotel credit at a boutique spot in Bangkok. Apparently, Chase quietly changed the rules - you now MUST book through their Ultimate Rewards portal to get the credit (no more direct bookings). As someone who religiously price-compares, this stings because portal rates are often 10-15% higher than booking direct, especially at smaller hotels in Asia. Did the math on my last 3 stays, and I would've paid an extra $127 total just to use the portal.
For fellow penny-pinchers, here's my workaround: I'm now splitting my strategy - using the CSR credit only at major chain hotels where portal prices match direct booking rates (Marriott, Hilton, etc.). For smaller hotels and guesthouses, I'm booking direct with my Capital One Venture X, which gives me more flexibility. The CSR's $550 annual fee was already a stretch for my backpacker budget, and this change makes me question keeping it next year. Anyone else finding creative ways to maximize hotel credits without getting locked into inflated portal rates?
