Charging for cabin bags at the gate feels like a money grab

Saw this today on SpiceJet from Bangalore to Mumbai and it honestly left a bad taste. Passengers were being charged for cabin luggage over 7kg right at the boarding gate. No checked bags, just a single cabin sized bag, and suddenly it’s INR 750 per kg.

What really bugs me is the timing. Doing this at the gate means people have zero options. You can’t redistribute weight, you can’t check a bag properly, you either pay or you don’t board. That doesn’t feel fair at all.

If this was enforced at check in, fine. At least people could adjust. But springing it on passengers right before boarding just feels like a cheap cash grab.

Curious if this is becoming standard on SpiceJet or if this was just an aggressive gate team.
