I recently stayed at a Courtyard Marriott in Roseville, California and noticed a $500 charge on my folio labeled as a “smoke free environment” fee.
When I contacted the front desk, I was told the hotel uses automatic sensors that detect smoking in rooms, and that the system must have flagged my room. However, neither my husband nor I smoke, so this didn’t make sense to me.
The staff member said she couldn’t remove the charge and that I would need to speak with the manager when they are available.
Later, while staying at another hotel and using my Dyson Airwrap again, I noticed some heat or steam coming off it, which made me wonder if that could have triggered the alarm in the previous room rather than actual smoke. These devices are fairly common, so I’m concerned this could happen to other guests as well.
I plan to follow up with the hotel manager and also check my folio more carefully at future stays in case similar systems are in place.
