Charged by Booking.com after free cancellation… anyone dealt with this?

I booked a hotel in Seoul for 5 nights and cancelled it immediately under the free cancellation policy.


My friend booked the same hotel for the same dates, and I paid for her booking since we were traveling together. That charge went through as expected.


A few days later, I noticed another charge from Booking.com for the same amount as my original cancelled booking. I contacted the hotel and they told me to contact Booking.com. Booking support says they need to see my bank statement to confirm whether I was charged twice.


Has anyone had something like this happen before? Did Booking.com actually refund it once they reviewed the statement, or is there something else I should be doing?
