Charged £75 by Ryanair for a bag that’s flown for years without issue

I’ve been using the same cabin bag since 2014. Bought it at the airport, always within airline limits, measured plenty of times over the years with no problems.

On my latest Ryanair flight, staff decided it was suddenly too wide by about a centimeter and charged me £75 at the gate. This was despite the fact that I’d already paid for priority boarding, which includes an extra cabin bag. The bag fit fine in the overhead as it always has.

I get that Ryanair has strict rules, but the inconsistency is what really bothers me. A bag that’s been accepted for years is now an instant £75 penalty, especially during already expensive holiday travel.

Has anyone else noticed tighter or more arbitrary bag enforcement lately, or did I just get unlucky this time?
