Hello, I’m traveling to Turkey in September with my girlfriend for about 10–14 days.
Our confirmed plan so far is:
We’ll fly into Ankara and stay there for 2–3 days.
Then we’re heading to Cappadocia, where we’ll stay for 4–5 days. I have a few questions about Cappadocia: is renting a car necessary there? How are the roads and traffic? Also, which village is best to use as a base?
After Cappadocia, we have around 5 more days left in Turkey, and I’m not sure where to go next. I’m considering a few options:
Lake Van – looks amazing in photos, very scenic and not very touristy, but it’s quite far (12+ hours by bus from Kayseri)
Diyarbakir – interesting Kurdish culture and nearby Mardin for day trips, but I’ve read mixed things about safety
Antalya – probably the safest and easiest option, but also very tourist-heavy
Which of these would you recommend?
Also a few extra questions:
Where is the best place to book hotels or apartments in Turkey? I noticed very limited options on Airbnb and Booking in places like Van and Diyarbakir.
How are intercity buses like Kamil Koç for long-distance travel? Are they comfortable enough for multi-hour trips?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
